David,
Sorry it's taken me so long to write my impressions of the Lyngdorf modification.... I've put together a brief testimonial--I hope it's useful to you!
I've always enjoyed the potential of the Lyngdorf DPA-1. It provides room correction that works as advertised without negative side-effects; offers an internal DAC for multiple digital inputs; and provides a lot of input/output flexibility. However, it was too polite-sounding, and lacked any appreciable excitement, high resolution, or noteworthy characteristics that really serve the music well. Somewhat dismayed, I started researching what the Upgrade Company could do, and after a couple conversations with David I felt confident that his SE upgrade would be a worthwhile improvement.
After a couple weeks under the knife, it returned. It was packed supremely well (much better than I did, or could have), and looked great -- complete with SE upgrade certification and rear-panel sticker. I let the unit acclimate for a bit, plugged it in, and gave it a brief audition. My first impressions were that the character of the sound was entirely transformed. It was incisive, without being bright or edgy; it sounded naturally dynamic; it was detailed, detailed, detailed; the soundstage was quite good; but, most importantly, it sounded smooth and effortless. (That's what got me the most.) There was not a single aspect of its performance that made me question whether the upgrade was worthwhile.
What's so impressive and satisfying is the gradual improvement that occurs with break-in. With time, its performance became staggeringly good. So good, in fact, that I've declared it as my first "heirloom" piece -- truly state-of-the-art sound, and I'm amused by how much I'd need to spend for appreciably better performance. After listening to a few recordings last night, the performers on stage started taking on an almost uncanny lifelike presence and size. The music was dynamic, and so incredibly natural-sounding. I'm not sure what exactly comprises the SE upgrade, but it's telling how this unit is now competitive with models significantly above its price point. Most importantly, though, it makes music more satisfying than ever before, and therefore it's worth its weight in gold.
Well done, David, and thank you for helping me catch the dragon. I look forward to having the rest of my system upgraded by you.
Aaron Lindsey
